On February 27, a court in Hanoi sentenced the independent journalist Huy Duc to two and a half years in prison. This decision was prompted by the publication of 13 articles on Facebook which openly criticized the Vietnamese leaders and denounced the corruption as well as the regime’s control of the media. This conviction raises questions about the situation of press freedom in Vietnam.

Huy Duc, aged 63, enjoyed a large online audience and his writings attracted many interactions and shares. The authorities explained that these publications had a negative impact on social order and security, thus justifying his imprisonment. His trial lasted only a few hours, highlighting how quickly Vietnam’s justice system acts against those who dare to oppose the state.

Vietnam is ranked 174th out of 180 in the world press freedom rankings, according to Reporters Without Borders. Cases of journalists imprisoned for critical writings are increasing, illustrating a culture of repression of freedom of speech in the country.
