Vietnam is preparing to take a new major step in the evolution of its transport infrastructure with the imminent arrival of a high speed train line. This ambitious project aims to connect the country’s two major metropolises, Hanoi And Ho Chi Minh City, significantly reducing travel time. Vietnam is embarking on an ambitious project to transform its railway landscape by welcoming a line of High Speed Train (TGV) which will connect the two largest cities in the country, Ho Chi Minh City And Hanoi. With a planned budget of 63 billion euros, this project will mark an important turning point in Vietnam’s transport infrastructure, significantly reducing travel time and improving accessibility between the country’s main regions.
Work planned for 2027
While the Vietnamese railway network has offered traditional connections to say the least, things are about to change. The start of work on this new high-speed line is scheduled for 2027, with an inauguration planned for 2035, coinciding with the sixtieth anniversary of the for the reunification of the country after the Vietnam War. The 1,500 kilometer journey, currently completed in 20 to 30 hours, will be reduced to just five hours thanks to trains traveling at speeds of up to 300 km/h.
A line connecting major cities
This new TGV line will provide Vietnam with the possibility of connecting to all 23 stations along its route, including destinations popular with tourists such as Danang And Hue. The rapid links will not only provide an efficient means of transport, but will also boost the local economy by improving access to tourist areas and facilitating trade between different regions of the country.
A project supported by Parliament
THE Vietnamese Parliament recently agreed to the project, signaling a strong commitment to modern rail infrastructure. This vote marked a crucial step in securing the future of rail travel transport in Vietnam. Officials say the line could also be part of an interconnected transportation network in Southeast Asia, increasing regional travel opportunities.
Improvement of existing infrastructure
Currently, the Vietnamese railway network extends over more than 2,500 kilometers, heritage of constructions dating from the colonial era.
